Hi, Neil. Stumbling isn’t always a bad thing, as I stumbled upon your blog today after seeing your Adam’s Hike update on the AT Section Hikers Facebook page… I’ve been sitting here for an hour reading some some of your posts, reading your story. I can’t help but think how corny this sounds, having never met you, but to be invited in to share your experiences and sit here just feeling so proud of you! I’ve been a hiker and camper for a very long time, but just last year started backpacking. I’m amazed every time I go out at 1) how many amazing people I meet/the humanity I find on the trail, and 2) how every outing, every trip, no matter how small the challenge it just helps build you up. And look at us, not just living life but experiencing it, and sharing it with this hiking/backpacking/cycling nature-loving subculture of people who just “get” it. Thank you for sharing your experiences, your story. You’re a wonderful writer. Hike safe, Neil, and know that there is one more stranger-friend behind you every step of the way! ~Sonya in Sunbury, Ohio (From Eastern PA originally)

Bicycling seems intimidating because it necessarily involves equipment jargon. Between that and Lycra, I usually run from bike shops with my tail between my legs. Beyond the process of just learning to ride a bike, I wonder if you would be willing to share the steps for the non-gear-head adult of becoming familiar with the bike itself, choosing bikes wisely, moving them to the trailhead, storing them, and maintaining/field repairing them at least to the extent of adjusting a brake to keep from dragging in mid-ride. The only rule I know (and it has served me well) is to blow up the tires before every ride.
